Choices we make

Choices we make

What is choice? The right, power, or opportunity to choose; option. We make choices everyday. For example when we get up in the morning to choose to go to school or not. The choices we make determine our character. The choices can be bad or good. It's our chose to pick the road that is better for us. We have to think and make our own judgment of our choices. We will be looking at some authors that had to make choices, "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and "Dead End"by Rudolfo Anaya.

In the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost the traveler had to make a choice in which road that he wanted to take. There were two roads, the "road less traveled" and "the road that everyone has traveled". Frost took the one less traveled because he wanted to be different. To me this poem is about choices. It does make a different in what road he took that day, "I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference."

In the short story "Dead End" by Rudolfo Anaya, the main character, Maria that was in high school had to make a choices. Maria was a senior in high school and was a mother to her sister and brother. She promised her mom on her deathbed that she would get an education and be someone important." Two years ago, at her mother's deathbed, Maria had promised she would not give up her dream of getting a good education." Maria liked this boy named Frankie, who belonged to a gang. The girls that hang out with Frankie and his boys used to tease Maria about how she dressed and that she wasn't going to get Frankie that way. Maria always wanted to hang out with the gang. Maria felt that it wasn't fair that she couldn't do what she wanted but one day, Frankie and his gang hang out where she lived. The girls wanted Maria to chill with them but she couldn't because her sister was still scare at the fact that her mother died. After that day Frankie ask her "would like to go with him to hang out",of course she say yes. When they were speaking Frankie kissed Maria and ask her to smoke weed with him and do the dirty. Maria had to make a serious choice to be one with the gang or keep the promise she told her mother. Her choice was to stay in school and be someone and Frankie understood that. That's why Frankie liked her all along.

In “The Tyranny of Choice” by Barry Schwartz states how when different type of people with more or less choices. The people “who aim to make the best possible choice” are called maximizers and people “who aim for “good enough” whether or not there is a better choice are called satisficers. Maximizers are less happy with the choices they make because they aim for what is the best choices, the reason for this is they have to make more choices on what they want then thought who are satificers. Satisfiers just pick what they think the better choice would be even though there are more than options. It seem that lesser choices make you happier than thought who have more choices.

This image here explains about choices. It show a guy hitting his finger and says " Benny regrets buying the bobblehead hammer." Like in "The Tyranny of Choice" by Barry Schwartz. Benny is a maximizer he regrets his choice of buying the hammer because of it design flaw and is mad that he brought it.

In conclusion, choices is one of the things in life that I am happy to have. Even if there are good one or bad one we learn from then everyday. Like the traveler in "The Road Not Taken"who had to travel the road less taken or Maria with her education. We all have to make our own choices in life if we don't then we are just here. That what makes life choices.
